Microsoft Excel Program
Errors
If
you use MS Excel on a regular basis, you know how devastating a MS
Excel program error could be. Without MS Excel functioning, how will
you access your valuable spreadsheets? Replacing MS Excel is a
costly proposition as the program has a hefty price tag.
But don’t worry. MS Excel program errors aren’t necessarily the end
of the world. Microsoft has included a built-in repair tool with its
MS Office suite of productivity programs since the introduction of
MS Office 2000. So if you’re running MS Excel 2000 or above, you’re
in luck.
This utility is aptly called “Detect and Repair”. Detect and Repair
scans your system in search for missing or corrupt MS Excel (or any
MS Office product) files as well as any invalid registry keys. When
Detect and Repair detects these errors, it repairs them by replacing
the corrupt or missing files or registry entries with clean copies
from the original installation disks.
You can run Detect and Repair from within any MS Office program.
This is helpful if you are experiencing MS Excel errors and can’t
even open the program. Instead, you can access the utility from MS
Word and it will fix your MS Excel errors.
Note that Detect and Repair is designed to solve program errors, not
file errors. If you are experiencing problems with a particular MS
Excel spreadsheet but the program itself is fine, you will need
another solution.
To run Detect and Repair, simply go to the Help menu at the top of
the screen from any MS Office product and choose Detect and Repair
from the drop down list. You will be presented with a dialogue box
that asks you if you want to save your custom settings such as your
animated office assistant character, desktop shortcuts, toolbars,
recently viewed documents and any other customization you’ve made in
your Office programs. Choose “Restore my shortcuts while repairing”
if you want to keep your settings. Choose “Discard my customized
settings and restore default settings” if you want the MS Office
defaults.
The Detect and Repair tool must access the original installation
disks in order to replace damaged or missing program files. Because
of this, make sure you have the MS Office or MS Excel installation
disks available along with the CD-Key. Afterwards, you may be
prompted to update your installation or even to re-activate it.
Once you hit “start” on Detect and Repair, the Windows Installer
begins and starts searching for damaged goods. It looks like an
install but it is an actual repair. Stand by to insert the
installation disks if needed and to answer any prompts the Windows
Installer may ask.
Once complete, try launching MS Excel and see if your program errors
are solved. If not, try a complete reinstall of the program. This
will discard your custom settings but your data will be safe. You
will need to reactivate your program once complete and possibly
update your software.
If you still are experiencing MS Excel program errors after using
Detect and Repair and after re-installing your program, try
searching the Microsoft knowledge base for a solution. This website
contains tens of thousands of documents about known Microsoft
product errors. Simply enter your error code or the entire error
message into the search bar and you will get pages of data about
your specific problem.

scanner to see of your errors originate in the Windows Registry, as
they most often do!
